Provincial Health MEC Dr. Bandile Masuku is expected to visit Ms Martha Marias home today as a follow-up to the unfortunate incident which occurred in Mamelodi Hospital. This happens after the family of 76-year-old Martha Marais who was handcuffed to a bench at Mamelodi Hospital on 30 May 2019.

The family laid assault charges against the hospital leading to four people been placed on special leave last month 02 June 2019 due to pending their suspension over the alleged ill-treatment of Ms Martha. Although, Dr. Bandile Masuku visited the family’s home after the incident had occurred to update them on the investigation and apologise for the treatment, the family said that there are still more questions than answers.

The department provided counselling for Marais and her family for the trauma they went through. The follow-up visit will be conducted as part of commitments made by the Gauteng Department of Health to Ms Marais and her family. It is not yet known how the MEC concluded this matter.
