President Jacob Zuma To Visit Alex-JHB About 800 families lost their homes’ due to the flood that hit Alexandra, Johannesburg  on Wednesday and one child drowned.

President Jacob Zuma visited Alexandra on Tuesday to address the community about the flash flood that affected the area. South Africa experienced heavy rainfall in the past weeks. Residents in Alexandra, Setswetla who have lost their homes due to the flood that hit the area were accommodated by the government. The community will be accommodated until The Department of Social Development finds them a new place to live. The government is working hand in hand with The Gift of Givers to assist the community with their needs including food, blankets and clothes. One family has lost their three year old child, Everite Chauke who was swept away by the flood. The authorities have confirmed that other bodies were found but not of Everite. The President along with David Makhura, Gauteng premier and Des Van Rooyen visited the affected area. The president has spoken to the father of the child, Shadreck Chauke and has promised the family that they daughter will be found. Jacob Zuma gave warning that people must stop building their houses next to the river because it is dangerous.

Where the child was swept away

The Department of Social Development MEC, Nandi Mayathula-Khoza, also visited the area on Monday to talk to the affected families and addressed the solutions that the government came up with to deal with the situation. “The family says it was an accident, the family tried to save themselves as well as the child and unfortunately the child was swept away,” said the MEC. Nandi Mayathula said the family will receive counseling after what had happened to them. She added they are still praying with them to find their daughter. The MEC also visited Benoni where a six months pregnant lady was swept away by the same flood. “We will also be visiting Benoni where a pregnant lady was swept away, the lady is Zimbabwean and she also deserves to get social service support, we are also going to talk to her family,” said the Nandi Mayathula.
